Edward James Olmos directed the HBO Films drama, Walkout, based on the East Los Angeles student protests of 1968. Alexa Vega stars as Paula Crisostomo and Michael Peña plays her teacher/mentor Sal Castro. The DVD includes special commentaries and remarks from the real people involved in the event. Chicano! : The History of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement, by F. Arturo Rosales, is based on a four-part PBS television series of the same name that aired in 1996 and covers the Chicano movement from 1965 to 1975.
Racism on Trial: The Chicano Fight for Justice, by Ian F. Haney López, covers Mexican activism in Los Angeles in the late 1960s and includes photos of the student walkout.
California was also the site of the nation's first successful legal challenge to school segregation in 1931 when 75 Mexican American children were prevented from entering a white grammar school.
