On August 28, 1963, more than 200,000 people attending in the non-violent March on Washington heard Martin Luther King, Jr. deliver his now famous "I Have a Dream" speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. In 1983, the third Monday in January was declared a federal holiday in memory of civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennesse.
