Most of our books are arranged by their Library of Congress subject. This is really useful when researching because you can find one or two books that sound useful and then look at the books nearby on the shelf, because they also might be useful to you. The different subject areas are:
A call number is attached to a book or media items, and it functions as an address to tell you where the book or item is located. Library staff assign call numbers based upon the subject of the book or item. Books on similar subjects will be shelved close to each other, making them easier for you to find.
Sample Call Number:

First line: Read in alphabetical order. RT comes before RZ.
Second line: Read as a whole number. 41 comes before 42.
Third line: Read alphabetically, then read the number as a decimal. .T46 comes before .T5
Fourth line: Can be used for the date of publication or copy number if the library owns more than one copy.
