MLK Symposium 2010: MLK Symposium

MLK Symposium Panel

This year's MLK Symposium will feature a panel presentation on Nurturing a Dream Into Reality: A Panel on Educational Equity and Your Role, followed by a Q&A period. Panelists and their topics are listed below:

Dr. Larissa Fergeson, associate professor of history at Longwood University and scholar of 20th century African-American history, will set the historical context for the program.

Mr. Lacy Ward, Jr., director of the Robert Russa Moton Museum in Farmville, Virginia, will describe how the museum seeks to preserve and present a positive interpretation of the history of civil rights in education, specifically as it relates to Prince Edward County.

Mr. Darian Batten, Longwood student, will speak about his experiences in Longwood's Call Me MISTER (Men Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) program, whose mission is to increase the pool of available teachers from a broader, more diverse background, particularly among the State's lowest performing elementary schools.

Mr. Cameron Patterson, president of the Longwood University Student Government Association, will give the call to action following the panel presentations.

Dr. Naomi Johnson, assistant professor of communication studies and coordinator of the annual MLK Symposium commemorative speech reading, will moderate the panel presentation and Q&A follow-up.

Due to limited seating in Blackwell, tickets will be required for entry. Longwood students, faculty and staff may pick up tickets from January 5 to January 20 at the Office of Multicultural Affairs in Lancaster G26A. A total of 500 tickets will be distributed. Faculty may pick up a maximum of 10 tickets. Please make sure students who receive tickets will be in attendance. This program will be videotaped with copies available in the library.

Dr. Pam Tracy, associate professor of communication studies and member of the 2010 MLK Symposium Committee, has developed lesson plan templates for class discussion and assignments related to educational equity.
