MLK Symposium 2011: MLK Symposium

Greenwood Library guide to the 2011 Martin Luther King, Jr., Symposium and activities at Longwood University.

Superheroes for Social Justice

The theme of this year's MLK activities is Superheroes for Social Justice. Not only do the activities focus on the life of Martin Luther King Jr., they also support Longwood’s mission of citizen leadership.

On Monday, Longwood students, faculty and staff will participate in community service projects offered in the Farmville area as part of the annual MLK Service Challenge.

The commemorative reading on Wednesday will feature excerpts from a 1999 speech by Christopher Reeve, the actor who played Superman in the movies and spent the last nine years of his life as a quadripledgic advocating for the disabled and spinal cord injury research.

On Thursday, symposium speaker Mrs. Barbara Howard, First Lady of Hampden-Sydney College, will discuss growing up under apartheid in South Africa and how everyone can rise from a challenge to make a difference.

Everyone can be a social justice hero. What about you?
